10 new albums you should listen to this week

Every week, we highlight significant new releases available on streaming services. This week’s selection includes albums from Reekado Banks, Sho Madjozi, Yanga Chief and more.

Off The Record
Reekado Banks

Off the Record is a 6-track album with positive vibes and a much welcomed return to the soundscape of one of the biggest rising stars of Nigerian pop. While Banks describes modestly the project, it’s collaborations with superstars Tiwa Savage and Mr Eazi, are proof that he succeeds in everything he touches

Stamina
Dinos

Dinos unveiled Stamina with unexpected collaborations such as the second track “Moins un” with Nekfeu. Zixko, Zefor, DA Uzi, TayC and Leto are also included in the project. The French rapper of “pleurs du mal” embodies by his lyricism, the suffering of his generation with the charm and flow of a great artist, who has always been committed to Pan-Africanism.

Libra
Sabrina Bellaouel

This new project acts as an inverted mirror of her most recent EP, We Don’t Need To Be Enemies. After the experimental electronic turn of her last EP (released in September), Sabrina Bellaouel returns to an RnB with dreamlike and mysterious accents. She conceives Libra as a quest for the self, and its impulses and desires in an enigmatic sound that ”creates bridges to get off the beaten track.

Jeune CEO
Le Juiice

The rapper Le Juiice unveils her first mixtape: Jeune CEO. Arrived in the trap game two years ago with her video clip “One Way”, this artist from Boissy-Saint-Léger (94) already imposes herself as the “Trap Mama” of French-speaking rap. Also used to going to West Africa, and more particularly to her country of origin, Ivory Coast, she signed a featuring with one of the rising figures of the country, Widgunz.

What A Life 
Sho Madjozi

With her communicative energy, the South African rapper honours her mother tongue, XiTsonga, a minority language and culture in South Africa. The outspoken star does not hesitate to laugh at her country’s corrupt politicians on “Di Hawks”. She is used to denounce the xenophobic comments of the Tsonga people while continuing to share good vibes, the best way for her to get her pacifist messages across.

Lézard Vert 
Zoun

Zoun’s Lézard Vert resurfaces 37 years after its release on Reunion Island. A groundbreaking work in electronic maloya music, this treasure from the Indian Ocean is part of the island’s cultural identity, which has long been divided between sega music (associated with colonialism) and traditional maloya that refers to the torments of slavery.

Pardon My French
Jahari Massamba Unit

This American duo has nothing to prove. Madlib and Karriem Riggins have finally unveiled their debut under the name Jahari Massamba Unit, and it is a real success. The two acolytes have been working together for several years now:Riggins plays drums and producer Madlib adds numerous layers on top. They worked the same arrangement to create a track under the pseudonym Jahari Massambi Unit on Madlib’s High Jazz compilation in 2010.

Elektrik Makossa 
Bafang 

The two young Normans from Bafang rub their nervous rock with the spirit of Cameroonian urban music. This first album is an initiatory journey for the rock duo in search of their African roots: they are dreaming of a tour in Africa. Desert blues, groovy funk, and abrasive guitars, the universe of the album is a beautiful tribute to Manu Dibango‘s Makossa.

Pop Star
Yanga Chief 

The South African hip-hop star first made a name for himself as a songwriter on AKA‘s albums before going solo. On his album, he does not hesitate to criticise his country’s politicians while addressing lighter topics such as women’s beauty, clubbing… With his punchy lyrics and his infallible hip-hop beat, Yanga continues to conquer his audience with brio.

ZaZa Vibes
L.A.X

Nigerian singer and songwriter Damilola Afolabi, popularly known as L.A.X., returns with a new 12-track Afrobeats album featuring artists such as Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi, Simi, Peruzzi, Tekno, Timiboi and Omar The DJ. L.A.X started out as a rapper in high school in a band called Flyboiz, since then his talent has never ceased to make him climb the steps of success.
